Louis M. Groen Nature Preserve

The Louis M. Groen Nature Preserve opened to the public in 2012. The entrance is located at the corner of Gingell Road and Waters Road in Johannesburg. The preserve is open for hiking during the warmer months and offers excellent groomed trials for cross country skiing or snowshoeing in the winter.  Offering both flat and rolling terrain, this natural area suits all skill levels.

A former lumber camp, this serene preserve still contains remnants of the camp and sawmill, along with natural attributes including rolling hillsides and a pristine lake.

Louis M. Groen

Mr. Groen is noted as inventing the Filet-O-Fish sandwich for McDonald’s in Cincinnati in 1961. He started Cincinatti’s first McDonald’s franchise, and upon retirement, he owned 43 stores throughout Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana. At the age of 80, Mr. Groen, along with two partners, entered into a new business venture called Stop Stick, Ltd., producing and selling devices that would immobilize vehicles by causing their tires to deflate.
