Big Chub LakeA short drive past Otsego Lake and a few turns will lead you to Big Chub Lake. With only a scattering of homes along the shore and nature greeting you from every angle, Big Chub Lake is a true up north experience. A small boat ramp welcomes fishermen or kayakers to easily launch their vessels and even stand up paddleboards dot the surface of these calm waters. Deer and bald eagles frequent this forest lake and a charming canal affords you the opportunity to paddle your way to adjoining lakes. Tennis
Tennis is a sport for all ages that can be played throughout your lifetime! Thanks to the grant writing and fundraising of the Alpine Regional Tennis Association (ARTA), Gaylord has four brand new tennis courts located at the Otsego County Sportsplex. Along with providing the public with state-of-the-art tennis courts, this new addition will make it possible for Gaylord to host local and regional tournaments. You may drop in to use these courts, but making a reservation through the Sportsplex is recommended.
Gaylord also has several other locations with outdoor tennis courts. Aspen Park and the Otsego County Community Center have two courts each, with no fees or reservations required. The Community Center has a few rackets to borrow if needed, however, their summer hours are limited, so you may want to bring your own. Just east of town, Treetops Resort has 2 courts and you should call the resort for reservation information.
Best Biking Trails in Gaylord, Michigan
From mountain biking EPIC trails in the Pigeon River Country State Forest to leisurely rides along the newly finished Iron Belle Trail extension (part of the North Central Trail), Gaylord has a pathway for all cyclists. We’ve even drawn from our own experiences to put together a few of our favorite routes on the pavement to help you tour the best locations throughout our county.

But when I need a true escape into nature coupled with the peace that only water can bring, I seek out the Pigeon River Country State Forest’s coveted sinkhole lakes.
